Project Description
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In October of 2015, Williams Architects was engaged by the Villa Park Public Library to evaluate the library’s current and future needs and propose the most cost-effective solutions to address the multiple issues with the Library’s 1969 building. A majority of the systems and materials within the existing structure are original to the facility and in need of replacement or repair.
The Williams Team evaluated the existing structure and found that despite the need for replacement roofing, windows, and HVAC systems, the existing structure was in good condition and able to be expanded to meet the Library’s current and future service needs. Williams worked closely with the Library Board and Staff to develop a comprehensive renovation and expansion plan that resulted in a completely renovated, expanded library facility.
Our team spearheaded an extensive public input process that asked the community what they would like to see in an expanded, renovated facility. Features of the expanded library include multiple, flexible meeting room and gathering spaces; a large “marketplace” section featuring new books and A/V materials; open concept workrooms that encourage departmental collaboration and sharing of resources; digital media lab, sound studio, and maker space rooms; new lighting, plumbing, and mechanical systems, and a drive-up book return. Construction of the project occurred in multiple phases, with the Library remaining open throughout construction. Williams was responsible for developing a comprehensive phasing plan for the work that ensured a maximum level of service and access throughout the project.
